REDUCING NON-REVENUE WATER THROUGH ACOUSTIC LEAK DETECTION

ABOUT

ABOUT

WaterWise Utility Solutions LLC (WWUS) was founded to address our aging infrastructure problem. More specifically, WWUS aims to reduce non-revenue (NRW) in our aging potable water infrastructure. What is NRW? It's any loss of water between the source of the water distribution system and the end user. While impossible to know for sure, most estimates put the nationwide average NRW rate between 16% -  20%. Like much of the rest of the developed world, the majority of this loss will be through real, or physical (leaks) losses as opposed to apparent losses (faulty meters, inaccurate meter reading, theft, etc.). Using advanced acoustic leak detection technology, WWUS aims to assist water utilities address the physical loss aspect of the NRW problem. Whether it's through an in-depth water audit program, or as part of routine maintenance, WWUS is here to help with your water loss solutions.

Leak Detection Survey as part of a Water System Audit

A leak survey is an excellent way to help identify the source of real, non-revenue water loss (NRW) as part of a broader water system audit, or when utilized as routine maintenance. A leak survey consists of sounding water distribution appurtenances (hydrants, valves, services, etc.) at certain intervals utilizing leak noise amplification equipment. The aim is to listen for signs of leakage, a distinct leak-type noise, in the water distribution system. All suspect noises are then pinpointed with a leak noise correlator ground microphone. Leak surveys can vary based on field conditions, pipe material, and customer needs.

Water Distribution System Inspection

In addition to a leak survey, a detailed visual inspection of the overall system's condition will be carried out in the areas that are surveyed. Any defective appurtenances, system anomalies, and system map errors that need to be updated will be included in a final report along with any other
recommendations that are based on
observations made in the field. A visual inspection carried out during a leak survey can often find other sources (apparent loss) of NRW such as unauthorized usage or theft, and faulty meters.

Leak Detection Training

WWUS also provides acoustic leak detection training services to municipal water utilities. Training takes place on site at the utility's location. A minimum of one week of training is recommended (more is better) to help scale the steep learning curve that is acoustic leak detection. Leak detection training entails:

  • Basic acoustic leak detection theory in pressurized water systems and how sound propagates

  • Familiarizing trainees with leak detection equipment and understanding their applications and limitations

  • Recognizing leak noise and identifying false leak-type noise

  • Pinpointing suspected leak noises

  • Understanding the myriad unique challenges and situations that inevitably arise in the field
